MTN Appoints New CEO After Resolving Dispute with Nigeria Over Fine

South African-based telecoms giant, MTN, Monday named a new chief executive after resolving a dispute with Nigeria over a huge fine for failing to disconnect millions of unregistered mobile phone lines.

MTN announced that Rob Shuter, a South African who is currently the Vodafone Europe CEO, would take over as its new group president and CEO next year.

 Africa’s biggest wireless operator, MTN said in a statement that “following the successful resolution of the Nigerian dispute, it has completed the review of its governance and management structures.”

Facebook Partners With Airtel to Launch ‘Free Basic Internet’ in Nigeria

Nigeria: Country Records First Baby From Frozen Egg-TIWALOPE

Lagos — Nigeria has recorded the first successful birth of a baby conceived from frozen egg of a 44-year-old woman, who had suffered infertility for eight years, making it the first in the country and West Africa.

Instagram increases video recording from 15seconds to 60seconds

As the photo-sharing social network, Instagram, slowly rolls out changes to its feed algorithm, its users can now post videos up to 60 seconds in length, a substantial increase from the 15-second limit set when it introduced video in June 2013.

Barely two months after letting advertisers extend their videos to 60 seconds, Instagram is granting the same privilege to regular users.

Nigeria: Buhari Promises 10,000 Megawatts of Electricity

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said his administration has set a target of delivering 10,000 megawatts of electricity generation in the next three years.

The president, who stated this while addressing the National Economic Council retreat held at the State House, Abuja, said this year alone the administration would add 2000 megawatts to the national grid.

Apple launches iPhone SE

Apple Inc Monday launched its least expensive iPhone, the $399 iPhone SE, filling a hole in its product lineup with a small-screen model that targets new customers in emerging markets and fans of smaller phones as the company tries to reverse falling phone sales.

The low-key launch, held at the technology company’s Cupertino, California campus rather than its traditional splash at a much larger venue in San Francisco, did not wow tech experts or investors.

But the new mid-range model was seen as necessary to counter the dominance of cheaper phones running Google’s Android system.

Scientists Discovered Plastic Eating Bacteria

Washington, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Now a team at Kyoto University has, by rummaging around in piles of waste, found a plastic munching microbe. After five years of searching through 250 samples, they isolated a bacteria that could live on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), a common plastic used in bottles and clothing.
